This page is for you if you're looking for a local volunteer job. You'll see organisations Hutt Valley-wide needing volunteers, just like you, to help out in a range of places. Whether you're in Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata or Stokes Valley, you're sure to find volunteer work to suit you.

There are so many local organisations doing great things in the community, that wouldn't be possible without the help of volunteers!

Benefits of volunteering include helping others achieve their goals and gaining new career skills. Many volunteer jobs require on the job training, and some (though not all) include NZQA qualifications!

  • SuperGrans in Lower Hutt is always looking for volunteers willing to share their knowledge and skills with others. Download the volunteer brochure to find out more

Share your skills and get help you need in exchange

  • The Upper Hutt TimeBank and Hutt South Timebank are great ways to help one another. The concept is simple; become a member and volunteer your skills to others. You gain credits you can then use to ask others to help you in return, for example to mow your lawn, or cook a meal

  • Become a volunteer firefighter. There are volunteer fire stations at Eastbourne, Silverstream, Stokes Valley and Wainuiomata

Become a tutor

  • Read Write Plus in Upper Hutt is an organisation that tutors adults in general literacy and other skills. They're always looking for good people to train as tutors and they offer NZAQ teaching qualifications as part of your training

Plant native trees

  • Join Friends of Petone Beach, a local group ensuring the beauty of Petone Beach goes on, by restoring sand dunes by planting native species

  • Parkrun Lower Hutt is always looking for volunteers to help out with a timer, scan runners barcodes or organise the finish funnel

Do you like working with older people?

  • If you can spare an hour or two each week, to visit an older person in your area for a cup of tea and a chat Age Concern is looking for people like you
  • Woburn Masonic Village are looking for volunteers around the age of 16-60 who are interested in working alongside the elderly. Contact Woburn Masonic Village directly on Ph 569 6839.

Support people with intellectual disabilities, run classes and workshops

  • Blenheim Day Base is a place where adults with intellectual disabilities can come Monday to Friday to socialise, take part in activities and also have the support to access activities set up in the community. Blenheim Day Base is always looking for volunteers, whether individuals, or people willing to run a class or workshop. Fancy conducting interviews?

  • Lower Hutt Citizens Advice Bureau is looking for volunteer interviewers. Anyone over 18 can apply. Direct queries to cab.lowht@xtra.co.nz
  • The Citizens Advice Bureau in Petone is also looking for volunteer interviewers. Volunteer interviewers will work with clients by listening carefully, thoroughly researching the options available to them and by explaining the information in a way that they can use it. The CAB will provide all the training necessary for the role as well as ongoing support and tools to enable you to fulfill the role. Express your interest by emailing cab.petone@xtra.co.nz

Helping women and children

  • Soroptimist International is a women's service organisation which helps women and children.. They are looking for new members willing to donate some time to helping with local projects. The Lower Hutt Club meets the third Wednesday each month at the Angus Inn for a business dinner, followed by an informative speaker. Volunteer Hutt

Volunteer Hutt, a branch of Volunteer Wellington is another good place to have a look around. They have a database of volunteer opportunities and you can browse by Lower Hutt or Upper Hutt regions. You'll find anything from stacking library shelves, offering computer assistance, to monitoring CCTV cameras for the police. When you visit the site, just type in your first and last name on this page, then you can view all the jobs by region, in Upper Hutt or Lower Hutt cities. You only need to register (at the end of your search) if you want to go ahead.

There are lots of worthwhile local causes, throughout Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt cities:

  • Find out where and when you can give blood at mobile blood banks on the Wellington page (look through the list for a mobile blood bank in your area - the list includes locations in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt)

 

  • The Wainuiomata Community Centre welcomes donations of fresh fruit and vegetables, which they distribute to families in need every Tuesday
  • Hutt Valley Women's Refuge and Kokiri Marae Maori Women's Refuge, both in Lower Hutt, are always looking for quality used items for children and their mothers. Click on "Wellington" on this page to get contact details for each refuge. They get very little government assistance and need monetary contributions too
  • At Ask/Share/Give you can offer your time, services or things for free and you can also make a listing asking others for help or things you need
  • The Freecycle Network is a place where you can give stuff away or place a wanted listing. It's free to sign up and free to give and receive

  • NZ Red Cross support refugees rebuilding their lives. You can make an online donation or donate quality household items to a Red Cross shop in your area
  • Koha Care, 30 Camp Street, Trentham is a second-hand shop always grateful for donations of quality second-hand items. During the Christmas holidays they organise a Santa Run to help struggling families, by providing them with a food parcel and present for the children. If you can donate, call in at the shop in Trentham, or call them on 528 5642, or text 027 526 5642.

Prison Fellowship NZ reconnection programme

Are you good at speaking to people on the phone? Are you able to develop relationships? Do you have two or more hours a week to volunteer? Prison Fellowship is seeking people with good communication skills to speak to prospective landlords and employers to assist in reconnecting ex-prisoners to the community. Their passion is to see the ex-prisoner safely settled in the community. Do you share this vision? If so NZ Prison Fellowship is keen to hear from you!
