Even if you have high complex needs you can still choose to remain living at home with help from the many community service groups in the Hutt Valley.

Support services for the elderly in Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt

There are lots of support agencies in the Hutt Valley to call on so we've listed them below for you.

Te Awakairangi Health Network provides a wide range of primary healthcare services and support to people living in the Hutt Valley and in particular focusing on Maori and Pacifica. Ph 04 566 5320 4th Floor, Levin House, 330 High Street, Lower Hutt.

Advocacy and social support groups

  • Age Concern Wellington visit socially isolated older people in their home and assist with other support services, advocacy and education phone 04 499 6646
  • Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Service offers support and advocacy for older people and their families/friends affected by abuse,  neglect or  self neglect.

  • St John Caring Caller offer a free telephone friendship service ph 0800 780 780
  • Wellington City Mission for Seniors offers a free service to support and encourage Hutt Valley older persons make positive changes to their social, health and wellbeing needs. Experienced nurses, social and support workers visit the homes of older people living in the Hutt Valley areas. ph 04 477 5985 email
  • Wesley Community Action offers professional, community-based support for independent living at home including social welfare, counselling and outings. Wesley Community Action is a contracted provider to Capital and Coast and Hutt Valley District Health Boards, so a ‘needs-assessment’ is required to access their services. Contact ph 04 567 0023 for homecare and (04) 568 6392 for counselling. 
  • Capital Seniors Inc is a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic senior migrant citizens society providing opportunities to socialise at regular fortnightly meetings. They also visit rest homes and hospitals to provide companionship, day trips and attend to the small needs of ailing migrant inmates. Homebased care

  • Access Hutt Valley specialises in home-based healthcare and support for independent living.   • Enliven offers community based support including personal care, household management, occupational and physiotherapy, nursing care and rehabilitation.   • Pacific Health Service Hutt Valley provides Pacific people living in the Hutt Valley with quality  community based nursing care services, disease intervention and prevention strategies and long term conditions care. Ph 04 577 0394 or email Located at 1 Hewer Cr, Naenae, Lower Hutt.

Dementia support

Marae based health services

  • Orongomai Marae Health Services, Upper Hutt offers a range of services for those in late adulthood including medical practitioners, podiatry, mirimiri (massage) and healing, tai chi and 55+ seniors activity group. Open 8:30am-3:30pm Mon-Fri (closed public holidays). Located at 5-7 Railway Avenue, Upper Hutt ph (04) 5289409
  • Kokiri Marae Kaumātua Health Services, Lower Hutt offers a day programme to improve the health and wellbeing of kuia and koroua Māori living in the Hutt Valley who are 55 years and over. Contact ph (04) 939 4630 or
  • Wainuiomata Marae Association offers kaumatua services. Location: cnr Fitzherbert & Wellington Roads,Wainuiomata. Phone (04) 564 8395

Caring for Hutt Valley carers

Caring for an elderly or disabled family member can be challenging. Meeting other carers gives you the chance to share ideas and gain a supportive network.  

Visit for fantastic information, advice, learning and support for family, whanua and aiga carers. Carersair webite is a great place "for family carers and friends to watch, listen, read, share, learn ... your place to close the hatch and unwind".

Age concern also has information, support and advice for family carers including respite care.
